I had one egg in my water glassing jar break open. Do I have to throw all of the eggs away? Could I possibly pull the good eggs out and start a new batch of lime water?

Hello I’m not sure this is an active blog, but I am seeking the answer to the same question. This batch is my first at egg water glassing. As I’ve read dirty water contaminates the whole batch, & after I soaked the eggs in lime for a few months one egg cracked. I carefully emptied all of them, changed the water then found everything was ok.

THEN it happened again. It looked like an egg exploded, so I have to wonder is Somalia detected at all? Of course I don’t want to die over trying to save eggs, but it seems they are fully sealed so I think I’ll be ok just changing out the water again.

Does anyone know if Somalia in eggs is detectable to the nose or eyes? In the meantime I’m thrilled to have discovered this method. What a huge blessing!

  I wish I had a better answer for you but I will share with you my experience. Some of my eggs have cracked and leached into the lime water. I have not been aware of the cracked egg(s) until I was removing some of my eggs to use. I still used the uncracked eggs and I did NOT change out the lime water. We do live a little on the edge but have had no ill effects. But please, if you find solid advice on this and want to possibly error on the safe side, I suggest you continue changing out your lime water if you have a cracked egg.
  One thing I know, waterglassing creates a protective barrier around the egg. From my reading up on salmonella, that occurs inside the egg before it is laid. With that fact and the protective layer from waterglassing, I would conclude that salmonella is not an issue in lime water that a cracked egg has leached into.

Thanks for this great info! I am ready to start my first batch.
I assume the ratio 1 oz lime per qt water means dry ounces.
So for 8 qts I should use 8 dry oz which is about 0.4 of a cup. Is that correct? (As opposed to an 8oz liquid cup)

Hi Susie! I get a very different measurement for your lime when I calculate it out. I used a food scale to weigh my lime for my water.

1 quart of water to 1 oz (dry weight of lime) is about 1/4 a cup of lime.
8 quarts of water to 8 oz (dry weight of lime) would be 2 cups of lime.

Please keep in mind that this is not an exact science so there is a bit of flexibility in the measurements. I hope this helps and if I confused you with my calculations, please let me know.

    It may be beneficial to purchase one. They are cheap. The lime is 1 weighted oz per quart – you can’t assume that equals a certain cup amount. A weighted ounce of feathers would not be a measured quarter cup and neither would a weighted ounce of lead.

Hi there!
I have had my eggs in a 3 gallon glass jar for about a month and I just noticed one egg is cracked. Do I have to throw out the whole batch or can I just transfer them to a new clean like solution?

Hi Christine, I’m terribly late with my response to your question. Personally, I would have left the batch as is and used the eggs. I had one batch that I did where 2 eggs broke and I noticed that none of the other eggs were affected. I hope you had success in water glassing!

My first time waterglassing eggs, the only fresh eggs I.could get were pretty dirty, I soaked them in some of the lime water and got them clean, then put them in my bucket with fresh lime solution. Will they be ok after doing that ? Thanks for any help

Did you have success cleaning them in the lime water?

My first inclination to your question would be to say no. My thought behind this not being advised is that the lime water wash would strip away the bloom/cuticle.

I’m super curious about your experience. You would have know if the eggs went bad when you cracked them open.

Hi Susie, I have tried to put them point-side down but was unable to keep them that way as I added more eggs. I don’t think the position of eggs is crucial, as long as they are covered with lime water.

Love the article..thank you…I have 7 ladies that are regular layers and would like to water glass the excess eggs we are getting…my question is…do I need to water glass a gallon(48 eggs) at once (save up to 48 eggs)or do I fill the jar with lime/water solution and add eggs daily…or do I need to add more water/lime to cover eggs as I go…thanks in advance for your help

So sorry for my late response to your question. If it were me, I’d add eggs to the gallon as needed. But I’d cut off adding eggs after a month or so in order to track how long the eggs were preserved for.

Hi Sandra, As long as the eggs are not bought from the grocery store (which are commercially washed) you can water glass your refrigerated farm eggs.
