These bite-sized delights are perfect for any occasion, from Christmas parties to St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. With their rich and creamy Oreo filling, coated in smooth chocolate almond bark and decorated for your occasion, these truffles are sure to impress your friends and family. So let’s jump right into creating these delicious little truffles!
The History of Mint and Chocolate
Before we delve into the world of Mint Oreo Truffles, let’s take a moment to cover the rich history of mint and chocolate. The Greeks and Romans enjoyed the breath-freshening and digestive benefits of mint for thousands of years. In the 1800s, mint chocolates began appearing in candy shops, but everything changed when York Peppermint Patties were sold in the 1940s.
Today, we can find mint chocolates in various forms, from Andes mints to Thin Mint Girl Scout cookies. Mint has even made its way into ice cream flavors and hot chocolate (my Peppermint Hot Chocolate recipe is to die for!!). Its refreshing taste and versatility have made it a beloved flavor around the world.
The Ingredients You’ll Need
To make your Mint Oreo Truffles you’ll need just a handful of ingredients. Here’s what you’ll need to gather:
- 36 Oreo cookies (you can use Mint flavored, and omit the peppermint extract)
- 8 ounces of cream cheese, softened
- 16 ounces chocolate or vanilla almond bark
- Green sanding sugar, sprinkles, or crushed candy canes for decoration
These ingredients are readily available at most grocery stores, making it easy to whip up a batch of Mint Oreo Truffles whenever the craving strikes.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Now that you have your ingredients ready, let’s walk through the step-by-step process of making these delightful truffles.
Step 1: Crush the Oreos
Start by crushing 36 Oreo cookies (including the filling) into fine crumbs. You have two basic options for this step:
Option 1: Food Processor
Place the Oreos in a food processor and pulse until the cookies are smooth and crumbly. If you have a Blendtec Twister Jar, it is PERFECT for crushing the Oreos and mixing these truffles up in half batches.
Option 2: Ziplock Bag
You may also crush the cookies in a resealable plastic bag. First, scrape the filling out of the cookies and set aside for incorporating later. Place the wafers in a ziplock bag and crush them with a rolling pin or mallet. Add the Oreo filling back to the mixture in the next step.
Option 3: Blender
This method will also require that you scrape the filling from the Oreo. Once you do this, place your wafers in the blender jar and pulse until the wafers are a fine crumb. Add the removed Oreo filling back to the mixture in the next step.
Step 2: Mix in the Cream Cheese
In your food processor or mixing bowl combine the Oreo crumbs with 8 ounces of softened cream cheese. Continue mixing until you’ve achieved a dough-like consistency. You may use a spatula or mixer for this step.
Step 3: Shape the Truffles
Next, scoop the mixture with a tablespoon-size cookie scoop or your hands and roll them into balls. Place the truffle balls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or wax paper. Make sure to leave some space between each truffle to prevent them from sticking together.
Step 4: Chill the Truffles
Freeze the truffles for at least 30 minutes, or refrigerate for 1 hour. Chilling the truffles helps them firm up and makes them easier to handle when coating them in almond bark.
Step 5: Melt the Chocolate
While the truffles are chilling, melt the vanilla or chocolate almond bark. You can do this in a microwave-safe bowl, following the instructions on the packaging. Be sure to melt the almond bark in short intervals, stirring in between to prevent burning.
Step 6: Coat the Truffles
After your almond bark is melted and smooth, remove the truffles from the freezer or refrigerator. Using a fork or a candy dipping tool, dip each truffle into the melted almond bark, making sure to fully coat it. Allow any excess coating to drip off before placing the coated truffle back on the lined baking sheet.
Step 7: Add the Finishing Touches
Before the almond bark sets, decorate your truffles according to your occasion. This adds a festive touch and enhances the minty flavor of the truffles. You can get creative with different colors of sanding sugar or sprinkles to match the occasion or holiday.
Step 8: Let the Truffles Set
Let your truffles sit at room temperature until the coating sets. If you’re in a hurry, you can place the baking sheet back in the refrigerator to speed up the setting process.
Step 9: Enjoy!
Congratulations! You can now enjoy your Mint Oreo Truffles! Serve them at parties, give them as gifts, or simply indulge in a bite-sized treat whenever you need a sweet pick-me-up. Store these truffles in an airtight container in the refrigerator for several days, allowing you to savor them over time.
