My Eliana got an American Girl doll last year for her birthday.
Previously I scoffed at these dolls.
$100? Seriously?
Who in their right mind would pay $100 for a DOLL?
Uh huh! Well I’m a sucker I guess because I was sold on them over one aspect.
The hair.
That’s what did it.
I had heard from several friends that the dolls really do hold up and the hair stays nice and brushable.
A $100 doll is a big gift in my book, especially for a (then) 7 year old. So my mom and I split the cost. Eliana loves her!
At the time I was due to have Exzander and I went into a hat-making-frenzy to get some photo prop hats ready for him. I figured since I was on a roll, I’d make a hat or 2 for for Eliana’s AG Doll.
But to be honest, I didn’t really find any that I loved or wanted to make, I was being picky I suppose. So I designed one. Here is my pattern for the hat pictured.
I’ve made this same hat several times for Eliana’s friend’s dolls.
Just remember, I’m not a professional crochet pattern writer. 😉 A couple of friends have tested the pattern out for me and gave me the thumbs up. So here it is…

If you make this hat, I’d love to see your finished project. (For reals) You can either share a link to the finished project as a comment or post it to our Facebook page, here.
Thank you friends!
Thank you for this great tutorial. Used the pattern this weekend and it worked out perfectly!
Great to hear! Thank you for the feedback!
I love this pattern quick easy and too cute!
So glad you like it Melissa! Thank you so much!
Thanks for this pattern! My daughters were very happy with the hats that I made for their American Girl dolls. Would you mind if I linked to it from my blog? I would love to do a post about making the hats. Thanks. 🙂
Hi Vickie! I do not mind at all! I’m so glad they worked out for your and your girls.
Thanks for sharing the pattern for this adorable hat! I’ve started working one up and I seem to have gotten hung up on Rnd 7. I get all the way around and I end up with only 39 st, ending on a third sc (where I feel I should be ending with a dec). I have double checked a few times that I have 48 st at the end of Rnd 6. Any idea what I might be missing? On Rnd 7 I should just be repeating what I did for Rnd 6, correct? I’m a regular crocheter, so I feel silly that I’m not seeing what it is I’m missing. Thanks for any help you can provide! 🙂
Lol, never mind, just figured it out! Thanks again.
Glad you were able to figure it out! You’re welcome!
I just tried this and I can’t get past that round 7 either, how did you figure it out Liz?
I just bought an American doll for my niece 6th Birthday this February. I wanted to make her a few things for the doll. I saw your pattern and tried it. Only thing I used a much finer yarn so I just add two extra rows. I just finish it and it looks beautiful. Thanks for sharing the pattern.
I’m so glad you got the pattern to work for your yarn! You’re so welcome!
I printed this up but it came up in a different language even though its in English here?
That is really strange Diane. Maybe some settings on your computer? Did you ever get it to work?
Lush hat gutted I can’t crochet
Hi Liz I am going to try and make this for my granddaughters doll so I’m going to have to google some of this lol also your pattern says to fasten of after round 11 so do I follow rounds 7& 8 for the last rounds
I mean j Julie lol
when I started on this I confused myself.. so I shared the site with my mother and while we talked on the phone we did it together and I understood better.. it is cute and pretty easy to do.. you wouldn’t happen to have a pattern for a scarf to match would you..
I’m sorry Sandy but I do not have a scarf pattern for it. Thank God for mothers right?! So glad you could work out the pattern together! 🙂
I am so absolutely confused by this pattern that I can’t even decide what question to ask first! Haha! I cannot read a pattern to save my life.
Sorry Amanda! 🙂 When I’m first reading a pattern, I usually fumble through it and end up tearing out much of my progress until it’s right. I’m a trial and error kinda gal…maybe you are too!
Thanks! I finally figured it out. Ive just gotten into making hats and following patterns so I made this after doing a lot of research on reading patterns and knocking out a few easier ones!
That is great Amanda! Do you mind sharing the link to the pattern you mentioned? I googled it real quick and have not been able to find it. Thanks so much!
