My Eliana got an American Girl doll last year for her birthday.
Previously I scoffed at these dolls.
$100? Seriously?
Who in their right mind would pay $100 for a DOLL?
Uh huh! Well I’m a sucker I guess because I was sold on them over one aspect.
The hair.
That’s what did it.
I had heard from several friends that the dolls really do hold up and the hair stays nice and brushable.
A $100 doll is a big gift in my book, especially for a (then) 7 year old. So my mom and I split the cost. Eliana loves her!
At the time I was due to have Exzander and I went into a hat-making-frenzy to get some photo prop hats ready for him. I figured since I was on a roll, I’d make a hat or 2 for for Eliana’s AG Doll.
But to be honest, I didn’t really find any that I loved or wanted to make, I was being picky I suppose. So I designed one. Here is my pattern for the hat pictured.
I’ve made this same hat several times for Eliana’s friend’s dolls.
Just remember, I’m not a professional crochet pattern writer. 😉 A couple of friends have tested the pattern out for me and gave me the thumbs up. So here it is…

If you make this hat, I’d love to see your finished project. (For reals) You can either share a link to the finished project as a comment or post it to our Facebook page, here.
Thank you friends!
I just wanted to say that this hat is adorable and I’m about to make it. Also, I got an American Girl doll when I was 10 years old and I still have her… I was 10 years old 20 years ago!! They are really sturdy dolls and the hair holds up as long as it is brushed and kept nice! The money you and your mom spent was totally worth it in my opinion, your daughter will have that doll forever!
Thank you Heather. I just told my brother about your experience with American Girl dolls. (He also thought I was insane to buy one) But you are exactly right, we are 3 years into having it and it’s just as good as new. It even got thrown into the wash! EEEk! Total mistake but man that doll was worth every penny!
Hi, what size does this hat work up to? I need a simple slouchy beret pattern for 1 yr old.
It would be too small for a 1 year old Lynn. So sorry but it is quite small and would be even too small for a newborn baby.
ahh ok, maybe give it a go, trial and error, add a few sts here and there and hopefully come up with a bigger size. thank you for replying Julie.
I just made the perfect slouchy hat for my 1 year old!! I don’t know if I can add the link on here but if you google 12 days of crochet, they is a pattern for a super slouchy hat that is soooooo easy! The picture shows a burgundy hat on a black mannequin head!
Thank you Amanda. Il check that out.
Love the look of this. Thanks for sharing.
I made this hat for my grandaughter’s American Girl doll and made a matching one for her. I embellished it. Thanks so much for this pattern. I love it!!! I’m posting a picture on your FB account.
Julie, please help with round 2. You have 2 sets of asterisks so I’m not sure which set to repeat from — the first or second set.
Thanks,
Gayle
Okay, I am a beginner, so I’m probably going to ask a stupid question, because I really don’t know how to read patterns well. On round two, when it’s saying to repeat around, are we only repeating the part between the astericks? Because when I go all the way through the 3 dcs in dcs, I do not seem to have multiples of the 3dcs of ten. My younger daughter is getting Grace for her birthday from her grandfather, and so I am trying to make up some accessories.
Are we allowed to sell hats made from your pattern?
Thanks!
Yes, you may Emma Rose!
Thank you for this pattern, it’s great!
Can you share a picture if the top of the hat. I am stuck on round 3.
Hope this image helps. Our beret has had plenty of loving so it’s a little “road-weary” LOL!
Also, have you create a cape that could go with this adorable hat?
No, Judie. I’m sorry I haven’t.
I love this pattern! My two neices received My Generation dolls for Christmas, so I thought I’d crochet the girls some accessories or clothes for their new dolls. This hat is absolutely adorable. Thank you for posting and sharing this! God bless you! ?
So happy you found the pattern Tonia! God bless you as well!
