Shampoo for Curly Hair

I really need to share with you naturally curly-headed folks my shampoo for curly hair – that isn’t drying and isn’t shampoo.

Last spring, I did a 3-part series on naturally curly hair.  First, I whined about how my mom cut off my cherub curls as a little girl and some of the products for curly hair that I love.  Next, I covered curly hair styling tips.  And lastly, I explained the key to amazing haircuts for naturally curly hair.

I mentioned in my post about products that I don’t use shampoo.  I know there is specially designed shampoo for curly hair, but I find those to be drying and expensive

Thankfully, I can *wash* my curls without drying them out with my Clarifying Rinse for Curly Hair which has apple cider vinegar.

The purpose of this rinse is to remove any product or conditioner build-up.  This is the same reason I’d use shampoo but with this rinse, you won’t dry your hair out.  Here is what you need…

Clarifying Shampoo Rinse for Curly Hair

Clarifying Rinse for Curly Hair

  • 1 Part Apple Cider Vinegar, (ACV)
  • 2 Parts Conditioner
  • Squeezable Bottle

Pour the ingredients into the squeezable container.  Shake well to distribute the apple cider vinegar throughout the conditioner.

To Use:

Wet hair thoroughly and squeeze some of your homemade *shampoo* on your scalp and along the length of your hair.  Rinse your hair thoroughly to get out all the apple cider vinegar.

Add any more conditioner to moisturize your hair as needed.  Continue on with your styling your curly hair as demonstrated here.

That is my shampoo for curly hair – not shampoo but better.  It has worked very well for me and my natural curls and I hope it works for you too.

    • I do like this best Jamie. I rarely do my sugar scrub and I find this one keeps me in good maintenance mode for quite a while.

  1. I stumbled across your blog through Pinterest and I’m loving your posts about curly hair. I’ll be trying this shampoo recipe and the short layers for my next haircut. I’ve been doing the “curly girl” method but I’ve had trouble grasping the concept, your posts have help to clear the questions I’ve had. Thanks!

  2. Loved your posts. I had a question, do you ever apply oil to your hair, like coconut oil? If so how would you wash it off without shampoo. I have been trying to grow my hair for ages, but have had no success. After it reaches just below shoulders, it starts looking scraggly. I would love to have long hair like you πŸ™‚

    • I’m sorry but I can’t advise since I don’t use oil. πŸ™ I’d suggest you get a high quality vitamin as maybe that is contributing to your problems growing your hair out.

  3. I have stumbled upon your blog the last couple of days and I am so excited! Yesterday i have tried styling my hair by twisting it and I must say it looked much better. I am sure I need a cut as you recommended and today I got in contact with Danna at Waves of Curls, and I hope to have an appointment with her in Birmingham in a few weeks. Tomorrow I plan on starting the “no poo” washing. My question is; how often do you use the clarifying rinse? THANKS for sharing…. I hope to be loving my curls soon!
