How to Dust Wood Blinds

We are smack dab in the middle of painting the inside of our house. As everything has gotten a new clean face…one thing that has been bothering me is the dust on our Wooden Levolor Blinds.

I have a solution for you so today I’m going to share with you how to dust wood blinds super fast!

How to Dust Wood Blinds - Fast

Honestly, until very recently, I didn’t know how to dust our blinds.  And did you know that dust is 75% to 90% skins cells?! Yep…uh huh! So the dust had to GO, ASAP!  <shudder>

Prior to my discovery, I dreaded dusting the blinds so badly we interviewed a housekeeper to tackle them, (and other areas of the house that are a hassle).  But instead of spending $200/month for a housekeeper to clean, I ignored the dead skin cells.  BLEGH!

Back to where we are today…painting and it’s all clean but those blinds.  So I got out my trusty Google. All the sites I came across recommended you fill your bath tub with water and a little soap. Next you put your blinds in there for a minute or 2 and agitate the water. Pull out the blinds and let them dry. I was game but the problem is a few of our blinds are wider than our bath tub is long.

And I’m so happy to announce that I conquered the dusty blinds and it was so much easier than the bath tub method!  Here’s how, but first…

Since we’re in Texas we can still do this as it’s not freezing outside.  For you Northerners, you have a few more weeks before snow flies.  Eeeek!  For you all, file this away as a great spring cleaning project.

Steps to Dust Wood Blinds

  1. Remove blinds from windows.
  2. Take them outside.
  3. Spray dust off with a water hose.
  4. Hang them over fence, railing, or table to dry.
  5. Replace blinds back on windows.

Seriously…that was so simple, I’m almost ashamed I made steps.  Ha!  But really truly, this worked like a charm to remove the dust.  Our blinds are spick and span clean and it was SO SO easy.  For our kitchen blinds, a few of them had a spot or two of grime.  For those, I simply took a damp rag and wiped the area.

And let me tell, our blinds look brand new!  And in case you’re wondering, there is zero amount of warping or water damage on the wood. Wooohoo!  I love easy cleaning solutions!

First – My Disclaimer

I’ve gone through and watched most of the videos on my playlists, BUT you may find some of them inappropriate for  younger children.  Basically…please use your discretion.  I recommend you view the videos before you show them to your children.

There are some weeks that have only 1 video some have more than 11. Certain subjects are extremely sensitive given how recent they occurred, (September 11th) and I was unable to find appropriate videos.  These playlists are a work in progress and I’ll be updating them throughout the school year.

To avoid copyright issues, I purposely did not put videos in my playlist that actually contained CC memory work.  I look at these videos as supplemental information for my children.  If you have any to add to a particular week, I’d love to hear from you!

English

I tried to help explain the different verb tenses by drawing little arrows on my whiteboard coinciding with the tense.  I also incorporated hand motions to explain what the tenses meant.

Latin

For Latin this week, I pulled out some of my hand puppets.  Check them out…aren’t they CUTE?!

The bear one is named Perhiberet (bear).  Just make sure to explain what bear actually means in Latin – something I forgot to do but later reminded my parents in my email to them. The children got to raise their puppet or object when we said their part.  This was so fun for them and I’ll be incorporating them as much as possible!

I got them a week or 2 ago from Dollar Tree so they may still be there!  Again I followed the helps from “Hissheep” off CC connected and tailored them to my puppets and hand motions.

Science

(at home) We made a model of a spine with egg cups, straws, and tape.  So easy and the kids liked the hands on aspect.  We covered the fact that they are many more vertebrae than 18 in our spinal column and what parts of the model would be parts on their spine.  I also read the the Science Snippets when the model was built and talked about our nerves.

Abstract Art.  Oh my…I’ll be honest and say this wasn’t my favorite lesson.  After a brief explanation, I had the children draw a continuous line, a big and swirly line that overlapped. Next I had them color in different blocks made by that line with bold colors.  For their next project, I wrote their names in an abstract manner, (turning the page for each letter of their name) and then I had them color in those different sections.

Science Experiment

For the science project this week, we made a model lung.  So many great lessons from this week from our previous Science grammar!  If you make this model, be sure to use a sturdy water bottle.  We went with a Evian but the plastic is thinner so it would collapse, (Dasani is strong enough).

Review Game

Golf, Tutor May I, & Sprints were our games for review.  I had some energetic children this week and I think it would have been better to reverse the order of the games personally.

So why so many games this week?  Well I’m glad you asked!  As I said the kids were a little more squirrely this week and they got very tired waiting for their chance at Tutor May I.  Next time we play, I’ll let everyone do the action the review question is asked if we have wigglers.

We finished up our review time with the children lining up and me asking them a question one at a time. After they answered the question, I sent them on a sprint down the sidewalk and back.  Ahhhh, what a release for them!

Classical Conversations ~ Cycle 3 Week 3 ~ Wrap Up

Our Classical Conversations Cycle 3 Week 3 went off without a hitch! This week I delved into my artsy (or not artsy side) for History.

Also, I’ve followed all the wise advice from those who have gone before me in tutoring for Classical Conversations.

Their advice: KEEP IT SIMPLE.

So with that, we are doing pretty much the same thing every week. And for this reason, I’ll only share what we’ve done different from our previous weeks.

History

My disclaimer is that I’m NOT an artist. (so NO picking on me!) But here is the “art” I used to convey the message of the history sentence and to try to help my non-readers remember the sentence. The wording has been removed to stay within copyright laws of CC.

Another tutor at our community had the children act out the history sentence.  She brought in tea bags and had the students throw the tea at a map where the Boston Harbor is located.  My girl LOVED it!

Math

(at home) Now is where I get very real and tell you that I pushed my older 2 kids in the Math department.  They are doing multi-digit multiplication right now but they are struggling with single digits.  We’ve put our books away for a time and are strictly focusing on multiplication.  But I’ve been looking for fun ways to hammer these facts in instead of just drilling.

My kids have a great time with this, though it is a little too advanced for my 4 1/2 year old who is just learning her skip counting facts.

Someday, I’d like to create cards to cover 10’s through cubes for week 11 of CC.  I’ll update if I ever tackle that.

Latin

I simply have to share the song I used this week, “Winnie the Pooh.” It was perfect for my 4’s and 5 year olds. The song on CC Connected was uploaded by “carolynsigg” it was incredibly helpful! I also incorporated a hybrid from the helps “Hissheep” uploaded to CC Connected and my own hand motions.

I’ll admit, I was a little scared of this week’s Latin, but the combo of the hand motions, song, and helps made it stick both in class and at home.

Fine Arts

We covered upside down drawings this week. For my little ones, I wrote their names and had them attempt to write them upside down. This was a challenge for them to be honest. I also brought in a handheld white board to be able to flip the image right side up when we were done. I drew a simple turtle image for the kids and we took turns writing on the board for the remainder of our time together. I hit on different elements of drawing to reinforce OiLs.

Science Experiment

The science experiment was lots of fun for the little ones. We took prints off of all 10 fingers and used the file, “modified fingerprint template” by “cdryden.”

(at home) We looked at these animal fingerprints and it was pretty fascinating! Check out those Koala prints!

Review Game

This week we played the cup game with little 2 oz dixie cups. I’m a sloppy writer so I printed my labels on my tiny Avery Labels (05267). I get a sense that my Abecedarian group is not competitive so we didn’t have winners or loser. But the children were pretty motived to get to knock those cups down with my foam Dollar Tree ball.

Timeline

(at home) I LOVE the “Timeline Tidbits” that the user: bentkitchen put up on CC Connected.  They are perfect for my little 4 1/2 year old.

(at home) The Story of the World: Vol. 3, Chapter 6, Pg 60-69. 

English Grammar

I used the English song for week two from the user, “marykbry”.  LOVE her songs!

Latin

We sang and chanted the Latin grammar this week.  The children and I got creative with it and used “LOW Voice” and “Robot Voice” from I Love to Teach.  I made another sheet following her adorable design.

This week it was all about mirror images.  The children really liked this one!  I handed out the images from ArtMadeEasy.com.  Next, we drew on the white board.  I drew one half of the image first, then I chose one of the children to complete the mirror image.

Grain Free Rollup Pancakes

I’m so excited to share my grain free rollup pancake recipe with you today! We’ve been working hard at finding foods that are kid-friendly AND grain free. Today I have a winner!

I found this recipe at Mel’s Kitchen Cafe. They looked so good but had flour in them. I decided to make them as directed on the site and then I got to experimenting. (If you’re not concerned about grains, the recipe linked above is EXCELLENT!)

My Grain Free Rollup Pancakes

I made a few tweaks to Mel’s recipe by incorporating buttermilk, butter, stevia, and coconut flour. YUM!!!! My kids didn’t even bat an eye when I gave them my grain free version! Win! I tasted both, one after the other, and the only thing I noticed about the different versions is that my grain free ones have an ever so slightly different taste. (if you’ve ever eaten coconut flour pancakes, you’ll recognize the flavor.) By no means, is the coconut flour overpowering though.

Our New Peanut Butter & Jelly Sandwiches

The versatility of this recipe is the beauty of it! Since we aren’t really doing bread anymore and I love that the texture of these pancakes is perfect for filling and rolling up. In fact, I gave my Eva a peanut butter and jelly rollup using the leftover pancakes and she gobbled it right down. Yay for peanut butter and jelly sandwiches being back on the lunch menu!

Grain Free Rollup Pancakes ~ Kid Friendly ~ Stacked

Grain Free Rollup Pancake Recipe

  • 1 c. lowfat cottage cheese
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 1/2 Tbsp coconut flour
  • pinch of salt
  • 1/4 c. butter
  • 1/4 c. buttermilk (can also add small splash of vinegar to regular milk)
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 1 teeny tiny scoop of pure stevia extract

Directions:

Place all the ingredients in the blender. Turn blender on and process until smooth; the batter will be very thin.  Let batter rest for 5 minutes.

Heat a skillet over medium-high heat or 400 degrees.

Pour batter onto hot and well buttered skillet and cook for about 1 minute.  The batter will not bubble or puff up like regular batter so turn after the edges are set.  Turn gently (these are more delicate than regular pancakes).

Remove from griddle when cooked on the other side.

These can be served as regular pancakes or with filling and rolled up.  The texture of these is very moist, especially for grain-free and coconut flour.  Filling and so delicious!!!

Classical Conversations ~ Review Fishing Game

This easy Classical Conversations review Fishing game was a hit with my Abecedarian kids!  Bonus is this game is quick and easy to make!  Branches, hot glue gun, scrap yarn, safety pins, magnets, and some “fish” are all you need.

Easy Go Fishing Review GameThe whole project starts with some tree sticks.  I cut off the “nubs” and rough edges on the stick and then sanded all those edges smooth.

Next I tied some yarn to the end with a double knot and a dab of hot glue.

Glueing the String to the Easy Go Fishing GameAfter you glue the strain gtonto the end, it’s best to wrap the string or yarn around the end to secure it further.  You can add some extra glue for the yarn to adhere to.

Cut the yarn the appropriate length then tie a knot on the end.  Attach it to a magnet
and sandwich another magnet to the other side of the string.

Now for my “fish”…I found this sweet little fish sheet online.  They do print out smaller on an 8.5″ X 11” sheet.  Mine were printed larger but that was in error.  The fish for printing are here: Fish Game

I made mine one-sided and laminated them for durability.  Then on the backside I wrote the review subject.  Since we have 7 subjects, I took 1 of the fish and wrote, “Go Again!” so one lucky student gets another turn.

Now to make the “fish” magnetic, I simply attached a safety pin to the mouth end.  You can slip the safety pin to the end and don’t have to make a hole in the “fish”.  I chose to go this rout instead of paper clips because they stay on there much stronger.

That’s it!  Super simple and like I said, the kids loved it!
